Leaving, Staying in and Returning to the Hometown

Couples' residential decisions are based on a large variety of factors including housing preferences, family and other social ties, socialisation biography (e.g. earlier experience in the life course) environmental market, labour market). This study examines, firstly, to what extent people stay in, return or leave their hometown (referred as ‘migration type’). We refer place where most childhood adolescence is spent. Secondly, we which conditions shape person’s migration type. mainly focus variables capturing elements both partners’ ties socialisation. choices made at time formation, i.e. when first child born. employ multinomial regression modelling cross-tabulations, two generations sample families who mostly live wider Ruhr area, born around 1931 (parents) 1957 (adult children). find that type significantly affected by combination partners' origin, parents' places residence, number previous moves, level education population size. conclude complex patterns over course, gendered work. These mechanisms should be kept mind policymakers develop strategies attract (return) migrants.
